Trolley Square: Episode 1
We’ve designed homes across the country, built a collection from the ground up, and taken on projects of every scale—but this is a first for us. McGee & Co. is opening its first flagship store at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City, and we’re bringing you behind the scenes from the very beginning. Our new YouTube series follows the full transformation, from an empty space and a set of plans to the moment we finally open the doors.
For Shea and Syd, the idea of creating a physical home for McGee & Co. has been years in the making. The brand began with a desire to make the pieces and point of view behind Studio McGee projects more accessible, but Shea always imagined it becoming something you could experience beyond a screen. The vision for Trolley Square is to bring that idea to life at a new scale: a destination where you can walk through layered rooms, experience our design philosophy firsthand, and see furniture, art, lighting, and decor come together the way they do in a Studio McGee home.
Episode One takes us back to where every transformation starts. Shea and Syd walk through the space before demolition begins, sharing the possibilities they see and the thinking behind what this store can become. The location itself is an important part of the story. Set within a historic Salt Lake City landmark, the store gives our design team the opportunity to create something distinctly McGee while responding to the character of the existing architecture—and to design the entire experience with the same attention we bring to our residential projects.
There’s a long way to go between an empty storefront and the finished vision, which is exactly why we wanted to document it. Over the course of the series, we’ll follow the build, installation, design decisions, challenges, and all the moments in between as Trolley Square takes shape. For now, we’re starting at the beginning.
